Market extended their pull-back rally and closed with modest gains in absence of cues from Asian peers. Gains in realty, capital goods and healthcare were offset by losses in metals, auto and FMCG sectors.
The Nifty ended at 5,704.40, up 21.80 points or 0.38 per cent. It touched a high of 5,720.95 and a low of 5,675.90 in trade today while the Sensex ended at 18,864.75, up 28.98 points or 0.15 per cent. It touched a high of 18,959.48 and a low of 18,796.60 in trade today.
Shares of Sterlite Industries, down 4.37%, were under intense selling pressure after the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) ordered shut down of its copper plant in Tuticorin following a gas leak late last week. Other losers included Tata Motors, TCS and Wipro.
Dr. Reddy’s Labs gained 4.16%. Other notable gainers included BHEL, L&T & Hindustan Unilever.
