The Nifty pared intra-day losses and closed on a negative note on today as traders squared off open positions ahead of the May series expiry.
The 50-share index ended at 6104.30, down 6.95 points or 0.11 per cent. It touched a high of 6,125.05 and a low of 6,069.80 in trade today.
The Sensex closed at 20,147.64, down 13.08 points or 0.07 per cent. It touched a high of 20,216.49 and a low of 20,044.74 in trade today.
The S&P BSE Midcap Index was down 0.42 per cent and the S&P BSE Smallcap Index slipped 0.25 per cent.
The S&P BSE Realty Index fell 2.50 per cent, the S&P BSE Metal Index was 1.13 per cent lower, the S&P BSE Power Index declined 0.77 per cent and the S&P BSE Bankex slipped 0.82 per cent. The S&P BSE Healthcare Index was up 1.82 per cent, the S&P BSE FMCG Index gained 0.58 per cent and the S&P BSE Auto Index was up 0.34 per cent.
Jaiprakash Associates (3.21 per cent), Ranbaxy Laboratories (2.79 per cent), Grasim (2.64 per cent), Tata Steel (2.27 per cent) and Jindal Steel (1.98per cent) were among the top losers.
Sun Pharma (7.09 per cent), Tata Motors (2.69 per cent) , Hero MotoCorp (2.39 per cent), Coal India (1.42 per cent) and Lupin (1.13 per cent) were among the Sensex gainers.
Market breadth was negative on the NSE with 522 gainers against 769 losers.
Foreign institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 711.12 crore while domestic institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 507.82 crore on Tuesday as per the provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.
